Mostly letters from Carpenter to his wife while he worked in Indiana and she was living in Rochester; while serving with the 4th Indiana Cavalry; and while working as a surveyor for railroads in Indiana. Also included are his military documents and orders; some items from Company A of the 4th Indiana Cavalry; pension records; and the by-laws for the Major Robert Anderson Post of the G.A.R. Also contained are drawings and correspondence regarding Carpenter's work as a surveyor; an 1872 edition of a FIELD-BOOK FOR RAILROAD ENGINEERS; Sidney Dibble's will and estate documents; photographs of Homer and Mary Carpenter; and Carpenter's G.A.R. ribbons and lieutenant's insignia.

A native of Connecticut, Carpenter was a civil engineer. He married Mary Dibble around 1850 and they moved from Rochester, N.Y. to Hendricks County, Ind. around 1859. During the Civil War Carpenter served with the 4th Indiana Cavalry. Afterwards he worked as the Hendricks County surveyor and as a surveyor for several railroad lines.
